Archie Comics have been popular with kids since their debut in the 1940s. They converted to a rock band in the pages of the comics around the time the Monkees were causing pandemonium on the music scene.

Ironically, Monkees producer Don Kirshner was fired from that gig when the pre-fab four refused to record "Sugar Sugar." Kirshner moved on, and brought the song along to his next big gig; producing music for cartoon rock band the Archies. The song and animated act were a huge success, fueled by a Saturday morning cartoon show.
