Originally hailing from Toronto, Canada, The DeFranco Quintet began their musical career playing at local events. In an effort to "break out," The DeFranco Family sent press kits to a number of teen magazines. They garnered a quick mention in 16's sister publication, Spec, though it was Charles Laufer of Tiger Beat who gave them their big break.

After seeing the press kit, Laufer invited the family to come to Los Angeles for an audition. Impressed with both their talent and look, Laufer signed them to an exclusive deal with Laufer Entertainment Group. A demo was cut, and soon the group was signed to 20th Century Records.

The first single, "Heartbeat, Its A Love Beat" became a mosnter smash-hit. Peaking at #3 in September of 1973, "Heartbeat" sold over 2 1/2 million


The group reunited for the first time since the ’70s in April of 2000. All 5 DeFrancos performed at a special release party celebrating the issue of a double CD containing both their albums. They all reside in Southern California. Tony works behind the scenes as a music producer and as a real estate agent while brothers Nino and Benny both work at a movie studio. • Many of the same musicians and backing vocalists that worked on The Partridge Family's albums sang on the Defranco's albums.
